North Carolina in July 2006 adopted a pilot program for instant runoff voting in the form of batch-elimination IRV for up to 10 cities in 2007 and up to 10 counties for 2008; to be monitored and reported to the 2007-2008 General Assembly.

In August 2008 the governor signed legislation extending the pilot program for local elections to be held in 2009-2011.

There is currently an IRV involving a number of candidates in the NC court of appeals election. In November 2010, there will be three IRV elections for superior court judges, each with three candidates, and a statewide IRV election for a North Carolina Court of Appeals seat (with 13 candidates).
